Enroll in UMDNJ Courses at POLYTECH

The University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ)   has partnered with Hunterdon County Polytech to offer a 2-year Health Science Program to Hunterdon County High School students. This two-year, tuition-free program provides students with an opportunity to earn up to 17 UMDNJ credits and an ACE Personal Trainer Certification upon passing the requisite examinations, saving them approximately $14,000 in UMDNJ college enrollment fees. This grant-funded partnership forms the first Career Academy of Health Sciences in Hunterdon County. According to Grant Coordinator Robert DeVoto,     “a career academy is a learning environment comprised of community educators and students who work together, in this case over a two year period, toward a specific career-college path like Health Science.”

College-bound high school juniors who are interested in health and medical  careers (i.e. fitness, nutrition, emergency care, exercise science, and patient care) will take a series of six college courses over a two-year period at the Polytech Bartles Corner Campus beginning in September. Students MUST take the 3-credit Dynamics of Healthcare course in Health Science I in order to be eligible to earn the remaining UMDNJ credits. Those students who do not take the Dynamics of Healthcare course can complete the program and still be eligible for the ACE certification, but will earn high school credit only.

A Hunterdon County based Health Science Career Academy is a logical choice when considering the strong market indicators: health care ranks as the largest and fastest growing industry in the US, and it employs over 10 million individuals; and furthermore, there is a projected shortage of qualified workers resulting from an aging population and advances in technology.

Health Care is the fastest growing field in the country, and the need for qualified health care professionals is becoming critical. This course is ideal for students who are interested in the health and medical professions, especially those who enjoy working with and helping others. The curriculum covers the history of health care, careers in health care, human anatomy, diseases and infection, basic nutrition, medical terminology, and BLS instructional training. Coordinated efforts with local health care facilities allow the students to experience the industry through volunteerism, job-shadowing, and mentorship.

Health Science I students are enrolled at UMDNJ-SHRP and eligible to earn credits for Dynamics of Health Care , Emergency & Clinical Care , and Medical Terminology .

With this new standard in mind, the Health Science II (ACE) curriculum approaches health and fitness as a means of preventative medicine. Students who enroll in this course will strengthen their knowledge of human anatomy, exercise science, biomechanics and applied kinesiology, nutrition, fitness assessments, exercise programming, and instructional techniques. Students will also have the benefit of ACE study materials as they prepare for the ACE certification exam in the late spring.*

Second year health science students will also be eligible to earn UNDMJ credits for
Medical Mathematics , Dynamics of Fitness and Wellness , and Medical Writing .

*Please note: only those students who are 18 years of age and are CPR-AED certified

Robert Siano (908-806-3855 Ext. 2020)

Rob is certified as a Health and Fitness Specialist (HFS) by the American College of Sports Medicine and as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) by the National Strength & Conditioning Association; he is also a teacher who designs the curriculum, educates, and ultimately prepares candidates for the ACE Personal Trainer exam, as well as for UMDNJ's "Dynamics of Health Care" and "Medical Terminology" exams. As a trainer, Rob has worked with athletes, physician-recommended programs, and those referred to as deconditioned; and as a Clinical Exercise Specialist, he has conducted stress tests, interpreted ECG's, and performed functional assessments.

Rob holds a Bachelor of Science from Villanova University and a Masters of Arts from     The College of New Jersey. Away from his work, Rob is an avid reader who enjoys family, friends, and recreational sports. As a personal philosophy, he believes that the mind, or psyche, can influence performance; hence, he encourages people to set short-term goals in order to increase the likelihood of perceived (or long-term) success: the attainment of short-term goals instills a sense of mastery that builds self-confidence and self-esteem. Ultimately, Rob encourages a quality of life that integrates both strength and flexibility— qualities essential to a body's resiliency.
