Law Enforcement Program
The Law Enforcement Program gives students a broad-based educational experience in Public Safety and Law Enforcement . Instructor: Sgt. Larry Blanke (Ret.), 908-788-1119 Ext. 2023 Law Enforcement Course 911 Emergency Telecommunication Certification : Students study 911 Emergency Dispatch to become certified as a 911 Dispatcher. Students can receive a certification through the National Academy of Emergency Dispatch. The NAED certification is approved by the State of New Jersey. Students who receive the certification are approved by the state to work as a 911 Emergency Dispatcher. In addition to classroom study, students who qualify will job shadow with criminal justice professionals and get a first-hand sense of what each job entails. Career options include paralegal, legal assistant, special agent, federal marshal, detective, dispatcher, police officer, park ranger, security officer, private investigator, EMT, hazardous materials responder, and corrections officer. The police profession offers benefits, varied work assignments, and unlimited opportunities. It doesn't tie you to a desk. It takes you out in the community to meet people and resolve real world problems. You see tangible results and build a set of problem solving skills you can take anywhere. A Law Enforcement Officer is a multifaceted individual with extensive training in crime prevention, investigations, narcotics enforcement, forensic science, law, and youth relations. With a career in Law enforcement technology many officers become specialists in Aviation, Highway Patrol, Emergency Services, Crime Scene Analysis, Criminal Investigations, Drug Enforcement, Detective Bureau and much more. Federal agents investigate Terrorism, foreign counterintelligence, organized crime, air piracy, and interstate criminal activity. Law Enforcement students can receive college credit from RVCC Articulation Agreements: Raritan Valley Community College (3 credits) Students receive Polygraph demonstration from the State Police. Criminal Investigation Course The Polytech Criminal Investigation and Forensic Program will examine the entire process of a criminal investigation from preliminary investigation to arrest and trial. The class will analyze the fundamentals of criminal investigation including investigation responsibilities, identification of physical evidence, marking, packaging, tagging and preserving evidence. The course will teach students sound methods of reconstructing a past event relative to crime based on three major sources of information: people, physical evidence, and records. Students will learn: The foundation and principles of criminal investigation. Sources and uses of information. Seeking and obtaining information. Follow-up measures to gather more information. Applying the principles to criminal investigations Specialized investigations Assess the duties and responsibilities of a detective/officer at the scene of a crime. Evaluate the organizational chain of command relative to the handling of investigations. Identify physical evidence. Examine the chain of evidence process to ensure proper in-court identification. Students will: Evaluate the ethical issues in criminal investigations. Produce works that reflect critical understanding in criminal investigation. Examine the criminal court system. Observe how forensic evidence is intergraded into the criminal case for trial. Exploring Careers in Public Safety One marking period This is an introductory course for students interested in opportunities in the fields of law enforcement and homeland security. This course will focus on careers in state and local police, corrections, security, and private investigation. Students will also learn about public safety agencies such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Drug Enforcement Agency.
